Chemical Peels

What are chemical peels?

Your skin has multiple layers. The top layer of your skin cells has suffered the most exposure to the elements, which leaves those cells looking weathered and worn. In fact, some of the skin cells in your face’s outermost layer are probably already dead. Your body eventually sloughs off this outer layer of skin cells to reveal the new, healthier skin cells underneath — but only with time.

A chemical peel is designed to expedite this process. By applying a chemical solution to your face, Dr. Chirino starts a controlled blistering process. In a short amount of time, this process causes the outer layer of your skin to literally peel away so you’re left with newer, fresher, more youthful-looking skin.

As a result, chemical peels are effective in treating:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Acne
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Freckles
  • Hyperpigmentation

What should I expect during a chemical peel?

Dr. Chirino adjust the depth of your chemical peel based on your skin needs. Deeper peels deliver more dramatic results but they also come with longer, more involved recovery times.

Dr. Chirino controls the depth of your chemical peel by using a certain chemical solution. Some of the solutions available include:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Glycolic acid
  • Carbolic acid
  • Trichloroacetic acid

What should I expect after a chemical peel?

The peel is designed to trigger your body to slough off of the top layer of your skin. You might feel as though you have a sunburn on your face. Then, the dead layer of your skin becomes scaly and flakes off your face. If you opt for a mild peel, this entire process should be done in about a week.

If you choose a deeper peel, however, be prepared for a longer healing process. Your face might swell or develop blisters, but this is normal as your body gets rid of the top layer of skin. All of the treated skin usually peels off within two weeks, leaving you with a youthful glow.

Minimize your exposure to the sun after your peel so your new, freshly exposed skin has time to heal.

If you want to transform your skin, Dr. Chirino can find the right chemical peel for you. Call Darilo Chirino, MD, or schedule your appointment online.
