STEM Cells Treatment

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are cells in your body that aren’t specialized. At the time of its harvesting, a stem cell is in an immature form and doesn’t yet have a function.

In a laboratory, stem cells derived from your body can separate into more cells, called daughter cells. Some daughter cells are still unspecialized stem cells, while others become specialized cells like muscle cells, bone cells, or blood cells.

When injected near an injury, stem cells may have the ability to accelerate the healing process by regenerating new tissue. Research continues to find new uses for stem cells, but there are several treatments involving stem cells already available.

Where do the cells for stem cell treatment come from?

There are several sources for stem cells used in stem cell treatments. Some stem cells, called mesenchymal stem cells, come from healthy donor umbilical cords shortly after a healthy baby’s birth. These cells can grow and divide indefinitely in a laboratory.

Other stem cells frequently used in stem cell treatments come from healthy adult tissues, most often your own. Dr. Chirino might derive stem cells from your bone marrow or fat tissue.

It’s important to note than many stem cells are somewhat limited in what they become. For example, stem cells from bone marrow are best used to turn into blood cells, muscle cells, or bone cells.

What can stem cell treatment do?

  • Heal bone and joint injuries
  • Improve symptoms of arthritis
  • Rejuvenate your skin
  • Reduce old and new scars
